What is Islam? A comprehensive Introduction
Islam is the fastest growing religion of the world. Islam, the earliest faith in the Abrahamic lineage. Prophet Muhammad SAW practiced it in the Arabian region about 14 centuries back. Hazrat Adam A.S. appeared on this earth with this religion.
The word Islam comes from Arabic word s.l.m which means peace. It denotes the meaning of ‘total surrender’. This surrender is to One God Allah Almighty. Unfortunately, it is the most misunderstood religion in the world.
It holds practice and discipline as its core basis.
Allah Almighty gave Islam to Prophet Muhammad S.A.W in the cave of Hira in 610 CE. Angel Gabriel or Jibrael A.S. came with the first five verses of Surah Alaq. The first word of revelation was ‘Iqra’ which means ‘Read’. This shows how important knowledge is in Islam.
Quran is the holy book of Islam. It narrates Islamic belief, acts of worship, and community rules.
Another word used for Islam is Deen. Deen contains several meanings but the most perfect is the path. Allah Almighty says in the Quran:
“Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allāh is Islām. People with the Scripture only disagreed after gaining knowledge, because of jealousy and enmity towards each other. And whoever disbelieves in the verses of Allāh, then indeed, Allāh is swift in [taking] account”
[Surah An-Nisa; 3:19]
